The Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)

The extended period of eligibility is a consecutive 36-month period during which cash benefits will be reinstated for any month the person does not earn Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). (see current amount)

During this time, benefits can be started without a new application, disability determination, or waiting period. This saves the person critical time by replacing the loss of earnings more quickly.

The EPE begins the month following the end of the Trial Work Period.

  • Cessation is the first month, either during or after the initial 36 months of EPE, when SGA is earned. During the cessation and grace months’ cash benefits continue even though SGA is earned;
  • This is followed by a two-month grace period;
  • EPE is a total of 36 months.

During the first 36 months of EPE, the person’s income can go above or below Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) without termination. See current amounts for people who are not blind and those who are blind. After the 36 months of EPE, the person can be terminated from Title II benefits or, depending on the income counted toward SGA, benefits may continue indefinitely.
