Extended Medicare

Effective October 1, 2000 under the TTWWIIA Medicare Part A was extended for Title II beneficiaries who return to work for premium free coverage. This extension provides coverage to eligible individuals up to 4 and 1/2 years beyond the current limit.

There are three questions to answer in order to determine when the extension begins. It is necessary to determine when the first and second month a person earns (SSA sees) SGA during the EPE.

Question One: Did SGA occur prior to the 14th month of EPE after the completion of the TWP and again in the 16th month? If yes, begin counting 57 months starting with the month following the completion of the 36th months of EPE to determine when the beneficiaries Medicare ends and it terminates the following month.

Question Two: Did SGA occur prior to the 14th month of EPE after the completion of the TWP but not again until after the 16th month of EPE? If yes, begin counting 78 months starting with the first month follow the first of SGA after the 16th month to determine when the individual's Medicare terminates.

Question Three: If SGA does not occur before the 14th month of EPE your question is, Did SGA occur after the 13th month of the EPE after the completion of the TWP? If yes, begin counting 80 months beginning with the month following the first month of SGA after the 13th month of EPE to determine when the individual's Medicare terminates.
