Ethics in Rehabilitation Counseling

RCEP is offering an on-line,10 hour, CRCC-approved course in Ethics in Rehabilitation Counseling. The course will explore the CRCC code of ethics for rehabilitation counselors and how it applies to real situations that arise in the workplace. Participants will share ethical dilemmas from their own experience for class discussion. The course is designed for practicing rehabilitation counselors, but is open to anyone with a basic familiarity with the federal-public vocational rehabilitation system. This includes, but is not limited to:

The course is offered on-line using the Blackboard software package, so there is no travel involved and the course can be taken from any computer station with access to the internet - home or office. Each week each participant is required to read some short lectures, submit assignments and post to the discussion board. The course takes approximately 1-2 hours a week and lasts for 6 weeks. It is available for CRC continuing education credit only and is not offered for academic credit in a graduate degree program.

The course is $20 for Region VII state-federal VR counselors. For all others there is a $50 fee. Class size is limited to 15 people per session.

Requirements:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Provide an explanation of the purpose of the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors.
  2. Describe the difference between values, morality and ethics.
  3. Describe the relationship between key rehabilitation values, the ethical principles and the decision making process.
  4. Identify and apply the five ethical principles that provide the foundation for professional behaviors.
  5. Identify the enforceable standards CRCC Code of Ethics for rehabilitation counselors.
  6. Apply the CRCC Code of ethics as a guide to decision making.
  7. Understand and apply the concepts of privacy, confidentiality and privileged communications.
  8. Recognize the difference between an ethical issue and an ethical dilemma.
  9. Apply an ethical decision making model to guide the resolution of an ethical dilemma.
