Trouble With Glenbrooke
Name of Client: Tony Boyd
Person Contacted: Tony Boyd, Sharon Boyd (Tony's mother), Megan Stewart & Allison Essner from Glenbrooke, Sarah Rollins from Kenilworth HS, Tess Cooper from Davis County Family Supports
Contact Made: Kenilworth HS
Date/Time of Contact: 2/7/97 7:30AM
I explained to the group, the reason for our meeting was to make sure we were on common ground. Megan wanted to know what types of things the client was interested in. The mother stated he wanted to do something like become a lifeguard. Sarah stated that the client was doing volunteer work at a janitorial site, the library and stocking at a food bank. Megan- Glenbrooke wants to observe the client in these areas and then set up sites at other places. We agreed to start the SEA on March 1st, 1997 and extend it through May 1st. The mother stated that the client also does volunteer work at a pet store and he will possibly be doing something else similar at the pet shop.

The mother called because she is concerned about Glenbrooke not starting the assessment, when they stated they would start March 1st. I asked if she wanted to change providers, and she said she really liked Glenbrooke, and she wanted to give them a chance. I told the parent I would Contact Allison. I then called Allison and she stated she was going to contact the parents tonight to set-up a time when she could come to the house and meet with them
Wait to hear from parents.

Lillian: Hello?
Sharon: Hi, Lillian, it's Sharon Boyd
Lillian: Hi Sharon, how are things with Tony? Is Glenbrooke doing the situational assessments?
Sharon: No, and that's what I want to talk to you about. I've about had it with them. You know, it's after the first of June, and they have taken him to only three sites for assessment in the last three months. Tony graduates in two weeks, and they haven't done anything!
Lillian: Well, have you talked to Allison about it?
Sharon: When I can contact her. She was supposed to show up this Saturday at Pets-R-Us, because Tony has been helping out there for the last three years, so it seemed, you know, like a good place to see what he can do. But she never showed up! She didn't call, and I still don't know what happened. It's the second time she had said she would be there and she wasn't. It's bad enough that she doesn't schedule anything for him, and then when she does she doesn't show up! I've about had it with the whole bunch of them at Glenbrooke. They missed all those meetings last month, and we can never get ahold of them on the phone...
Lillian: I can see why you are so upset - this is not at all what they agreed to do during our initial meeting. Do you want to change to another provider? Because you always have that option...
Sharon: I don't know. We've already started with Glenbrooke, and they know Tony now. What do you think? Are there other providers who might do better for us?
Lillian: I can't really say. Unfortunately, I've seen people have problems with each of the providers. And others who have been perfectly happy with each of them. I have a client named Kenny who just finished a very successful placement with Glenbrooke. On the other hand, a few people have had real problems with them, similar to yours. It's really not a decision I can make - you and Tony will have to decide. I'm here to help you carry out your decision, but I can't make it for you.
Sharon: I just don't know. Everything they say sounds real good, and they have lined up several of the assessments, just like they said they would...
Lillian: I tell you what, why don't we set a date, and if they haven't finished the assessment by then, you can make a decision about whether to give them another chance.
Sharon: No, this assessment should have been done by now. I'll give them until the middle of the month - two weeks. If they haven't finished the assessment and started looking for a job by then, we're going to change to another agency. This is ridiculous. It's the second time they've stood us up like this.
Lillian: That sounds like a reasonable decision. Would you like me to go ahead and place some calls to the other agencies and see how long it would take before they could take over? That way we could be ready to go on an alternate plan.
Sharon: Yes, could you do that? That would be good.
Lillian: Sure. I'll get back to you tomorrow with what they say. OK?
Sharon: OK. Thanks Lillian.

The mother was quite upset this morning. She stated that Glenbrooke had scheduled to observe the client at Pets-R-Us this past weekend, and they did not show up. The mother stated this was the 2nd time they have done this. She stated if they are not done by the middle of June, then she wants to change providers no matter what.
I asked her if she wanted me to investigate with the other agencies on when they could start the SEA if she chose to switch. She stated this was fine. I am to call her tomorrow morning regarding the other agencies.
I then called Denise at Medallion to see when they could start the SEA, and she said "tommorrow." Community Training, Inc. (CTI) stated they could start tomorrow also. Also, they even tentatively set-up for the client to be assessed in their affirmative industry program and their cleaning crew. They also stated they would provide transportation to and from the assessments sites. They told me to let them know.
Contact the mother tomorrow morning regarding the start date for the other agencies.
