Trouble With The University

PURPOSE:

I talked with Marion today who called to let me know that she had heard from the financial aid office that she cannot enroll in school until her loans are paid off.

ACTION TAKEN:

This is a loan from her earlier degree, which she had taken out to cover living expenses not covered by VR. Apparently it makes no difference whether or not the one course she needs to take this time would be fully funded. She claims that she had filed for bankruptcy in 1994 and that it had wiped out a few loans through individual banks, but she has one for approximately $1200 and she still is paying on it on a regular basis. She is not in default status. I told her that I believed that she could put that into a holding status or at least continue to pay on the loan and still return to school. I told her I had an article that I had cut out of the paper a few months ago that I would send to her that might explain the situation. I certainly am not privileged to all the information in this particular situation. She will get back in touch with me if there is any possibility of enrolling this fall. It does not look hopeful at this point.

NEXT ACTION:

I will hold off in opening her case

Phone Conversation: 8/19/97

Darren: Hi, this is Darren..

Marion: Hi Darren, it's Marion. I was just calling to tell you - don't close my case!

Darren: Did you get some good news after all? Are they going to let you enroll?

Marion: It's all taken care of! I was at Dr. DiMario's office today, and I was telling him what had happened - you know, about how I had told the lady at the University "I'll give you payment arrangements, just let me finish this course," but she still wouldn't, and everything. So I was telling DiMario about this, and I was pretty upset because I'd been wanting to do this, to finish the degree, you know, and you've been working on it and all. So he said "Let's not give up on this just yet. Let me talk to them." And he did! While I was sitting there in his office, he just picked up the phone and called her! And he just gave her back all the attitude she gave him. First he said "This is DOCTOR Charles DiMario at the Community Counseling Center." He said "Look, how do you expect her to finish her coursework and get a job and pay you if you don't let her take these classes? She's not asking for a new loan - she's ready to pay for this class in full." And darned if he didn't convince her. He said that since I had been paying regularly on it, they had no reason to think I wasn't going to pay it off eventually, so they should let me finish the degree. So that's what they're going to do.

Darren: It sounds like Dr. DiMario was quite an advocate for you.

Marion: I know. He's just such a treasure. I was completely convinced that this just wasn't going to happen. And I wasn't sure what I was going to do. But he just said, you know, "Let's take care of this. They shouldn't be doing this."

Darren: That's great, Marion. So you are all set to enroll.

Marion: Well, I'm not saying that until I get all the forms signed. I'm going down there later this afternoon to make the arrangements to defer the student loan and finish my registration. They still might change their minds, so I figure I'd better get it done while they are agreeing.

Darren: That's probably a good idea. I'm going to hold off on doing anything more with the case, for now, until I hear from you that things are worked out. OK?

Marion: Sure. I should be able to tell you by tomorrow.

Darren: Can you just call me, then, and let me know?

Marion: Sure.

Darren: Then I'll wait to hear from you before I officially open the case. But thanks for calling for calling with the good news.

Marion: Ok, I'll let you know. Good bye.

Darren: Good bye, Marion.
