Reviewing Juan's First Semester
12/18/98

Juan - Hi, Jack.

Jack - Hello, Juan. Merry Christmas.

Juan - Merry Christmas to you, too.

Jack - Are you staying here for Christmas, or visiting your family?

Juan - I'm staying here. One of my brothers might come up to visit for New Year's.

Jack - That'll be nice. So, how did finals go for you?

Juan - OK, I think. The Math final was pretty hard. But I had some guys from the class that I could study with, so that helped. That teacher wasn't very good at explaining some of the things, but I think I figured most of it out.

Jack - Yeah. Math was what sunk me. I never could get beyond College Algebra, and that was why I quit Nuclear Engineering.

Juan - Yeah. I have to take that next.

Jack - Next semester?

Juan - Yeah. I figured, if I wait until summer, I'll probably forget most of what I've learned and it'll be that much harder. So I'm going to go ahead and take it.

Jack - That sounds like a good idea. So, let's take a look at your paperwork. You have finished the semester… And as soon as you get your grades, I'll need a copy so we can document that for the file. When you called in last time, you said you thought you were passing everything. Was there any change in that?

Juan - No. I think I did OK. I probably got a B in the Psychology, and an A in Spanish. Math… I don't know, probably a B. It might be a C. There were some word problems on the final I wasn't sure about.

Jack - That's fine. Even with a C, those are passing grades. So now we can start writing a new IWRP. I wrote the last one to cover just this one semester while we saw how that worked out. Now we'll write a longer one to cover the rest of the school year - spring and summer. It won't start officially until we get a copy of your grades, but we can write it today. Then, in the Fall, we'll write one to cover that entire next year.

Juan - I see.

Jack - So, do you want to continue on at 9 hours, or move up to 12?

Juan - I think I'll stay at 9. If I wasn't working at the Center, too, I'd probably do 12, since that's what other folks are doing. But 9 is working pretty well.

Jack - How are things at the Independent Living Center?

Juan - Good. Things are fine. I'm working right now with a woman who just transferred over from the hospital. We're getting the paperwork together for her to get an apartment and such.

Jack - How many people do they have you helping now?

Juan - Right now? Three. During the semester I would try to get in a couple of visits before my first classes, which were about 10:30 or 11:00, depending on the day. Then I'd be back in the office in the afternoons. It seemed to work pretty well.

Jack - So you are OK with keeping the schedule that way?

Juan - Sure.

Jack - All right, then I'll write the IWRP for continuing you full time at 9 hours, while you work part-time. And your finances are working out all right? Your expenses are getting covered with the amount we gave you before?

Juan - Yes. That worked fine.

Jack - Good. Then I'll get your forms going here and we should be able to take care of you today.

Juan - Good.
