Federal Disability-Related Agencies


United States Department of Education

RSA (Rehabilitation Services Administration) - RSA oversees programs that help individuals with physical or mental disabilities find employment through supports such as counseling, medical and psychological services, and job training. RSA also funds state vocational rehabilitation agencies and RCEP offices

NIDRR (The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research) - NIDRR ("NIGH-der") provides leadership and support for research related to the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities.

OSEP (Office of Special Education Programs) - OSEP ("OH-sep") assists public agencies to provide all infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities early intervention services and a free appropriate public education emphasizing challenging standards and access to the general curriculum to the extent appropriate.


United States Department of Health and Human Services

ADD (The Administration on Developmental Disabilities ) - ADD supports quality services for persons with developmental disabilities; assists states to increase the independence, productivity, and community inclusion of persons with developmental disabilities; administers the Basic State Grant Program; and serves as a resource to reduce or eliminate barriers for persons with developmental disabilities.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSA) - includes The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services - provides health insurance for over 74 million Americans through Medicare and Medicaid. Formerly the Health Care Financing Administration.


Presidential Task Force on Employment of People with Disabilities - The task force evaluates Federal
programs to identify barriers to employment of adults with disabilities and propose changes to remove the barriers. Areas addressed include: reasonable accommodations; access to health care; lack of consumer-driven, long-term supports and services; transportation; accessible and integrated housing; child care; education; employment retention; promotion; and economic incentives to work.


United States Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board  - Created in 1973, the Board has served the nation as the only independent federal agency whose primary mission is accessibility for people with disabilities.
