The week of September 15th through 19th, 2003, RCEP7 and the Great Plains ADA & IT Center hosted a series of free presentations on designing accessible websites. Several laws now require that the websites of all federal agencies and projects be accessible to people with disabilities. Recently, the State of Missouri developed its own set of web accessibility requirements. This series of presentations helped MU web designers, tech support staff, faculty, and other interested individuals understand these requirements and related issues. All sessions were held in Memorial Union on the MU campus..

Please note: this is NOT an introduction to basic web design - the presenters assumed that all participants are already familiar with HTML and web design.

Agenda

The Basics of Web Accessibility

• A basic lesson on web accessibility issues beyond alt tags and Bobby.
• Presenter: Julie Brinkhoff, Disability Management Consulting Group

Screen Reader Demonstration

• A demonstration of some of the alternative ways people with disabilities access your web page. The presenters demonstrated the use of a screen reader (JAWS) and voice controlled keyboards and mice (Dragon Naturally Speaking). They also talked about common web design practices that help them better understand and navigate web sites, and practices that create barriers.

Accessible Websites & Dreamweaver

• Covers the accessibility features built in to Dreamweaver, how to run accessibility checks, accessibility features for Flash, and more.

Missouri Web Accessibility Regulations

• Covered the implications for MU websites of the new Missouri standards for web accessibility and how they compare to the Federal Regulations (Section 508).
