2.03 - Getting Ready To Start Working With the Model: Phase 1, Page 3

Question 4: The final question in Phase 1, “What can I do to make this happen?” involves converting the actions identified in previous questions into a goal statement with criteria specified for achieving the goal. At this point, it is sometimes helpful to provide instruction in how to write measurable goals, how to identify the steps that lead to the goal, and how to specify the criteria for determining progress towards the goal. The process may require collaboration between the facilitator and the person with the disability to work out the details.

Question 4: What can I do to make this happen?

  • Objective 1 - Teach person to state a long-term career goal, short-term employment goals, and objects to reach short-term employment goals.
    • Sample Responses
      • I will get a job as an office assistant.
      • I will learn to use a computer.
      • I will enroll in a computer training class.

Addressing the first four questions under Phase 1 results in solving the first problem, “What is my goal?” and leads to the problem posed in the second phase, “What is my plan?” The time it takes to work through Phase 1 will vary depending upon the capacities, experiences, interests, learning needs, and facilitator time constraints. As in the first phase, the person with the disability will solve the problem in Phase 2 by answering the questions that comprise the steps in a means-end problem solving sequence.
